Vegetarian Protein Supplement by TwinlabAs the name suggests Twinlab Clean Series Veggie Protein is a protein powder formulated specifically for vegetarians. The product has been certified vegan-friendly by the Vegan Awareness Foundation, is non-GMO tested, and quality standards have been tested and approved by the American National Standards Institute (NSF).

Twinlab is based in Utah, USA. The company has been manufacturing vitamin and mineral supplements, and bodybuilding blends since 1968, and currently has over 500 products in their range so their experience in producing nutritional supplements cannot be questioned.

Each (36g) scoop of Veggie Protein powder provides 21g of protein and contains just 110 calories, but flavor choices appear to be limited to vanilla. As a protein provider Veggie Protein looks pretty good. The lack of flavor choices is a little disappointing, but non-vanilla-loving users may be able to mask the flavor by mixing the powder with a beverage that has a more acceptable taste.

Twinlab suggests combining 1 (36g) scoop of powder with 8 to 10 oz. of cold water or almond milk, but there is no reason why an alternative beverage could not be used. The mix should then be shaken or blended for about 5 seconds.

Ingredients

Inclusion rates are not provided, but the key ingredients are:

  • Yellow peas:  Rich in essential (and non-essential) amino acids, yellow peas are particularly high in lysine and arginine and are an excellent source of protein.
  • Sprouted brown rice:  Rich in vitamins and minerals, and very nutritious, brown rice has the power to boost the growth hormones necessary to promote efficient muscle growth and repair.
  • Chlorella:  A single-celled algae found in fresh water. It can also be sourced from leafy, green vegetables. Chlorella is rich in protein and its ability to stimulate red blood cell production may provide further bodybuilding benefits.
  • Black chia seeds: A popular inclusion in bodybuilding formulations, chia seeds contain all the essential amino acids the body needs to build quality muscle, are high in fiber, and offer the further benefit of being free from cholesterol.

Twinlab says the above ingredient have been ‘infused with an enzyme blend to help ease digestion’. No information is provided about this ‘enzyme blend’, but the fact that Veggie Protein has been approved by the American National Standards Institute, and several other standards-monitoring agencies, suggests this should not be a reason for concern.

The manufacturers warn that the blend should not be used by pregnant or nursing mothers and recommend people who have existing health issues, or who are taking medication, seek medical advice before use.

Don’t rule them out, even if your guts are used to cookies and cream flavoured whey isolate.
